Nigeria has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), reiterating its commitment to the principles of self-determination, decolonisation and the peaceful resolution of conflicts in line with the African Union’s founding principles.
The reaffirmation came during a bilateral meeting in Abuja between the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, and the Sahrawi Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, who visited Nigeria as the Special Envoy of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both countries to review their long-standing diplomatic ties and explore ways to deepen political dialogue, expand bilateral cooperation and promote peace, stability and sustainable development across the African continent.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Enikanolaiye reiterated Nigeria’s longstanding position on the Sahrawi issue, emphasizing the country’s commitment to the principles of self-determination, decolonisation and respect for the sanctity of colonial borders.
“Nigeria remains unwavering in its support for peaceful and just resolutions to regional challenges through dialogue and adherence to international law,” he said,
He noted that Nigeria has consistently recognised and supported the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic since extending formal recognition in 1984.
The special Envoy Mr.Beissat on his part conveyed warm greetings from the Sahrawi leadership and presented a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu. He expressed appreciation for “Nigeria’s principled stance on African issues and its enduring support for the Sahrawi cause”.
Both ministers also agreed to explore new areas of collaboration, including capacity building, economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges, aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries.
They expressed confidence that the renewed engagement would further consolidate the historic bonds of friendship and solidarity between Nigeria and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic while advancing the broader objectives of African unity, peace and development.
