Nigeria, US Deepen Defence Cooperation on Military Technology

Nokai Origin, Abuja

Nigeria is seeking to translate its longstanding defence relationship with the United States into deeper cooperation on military technology, intelligence and technical capacity, as the country works to strengthen its counter-terrorism capabilities and modernise the Armed Forces.

The focus emerged during the Defence Minister’s engagement in Washington, where discussions linked Nigeria’s broader diversification of defence partnerships with continued access to U.S. technological and intelligence capabilities relevant to ongoing security operations.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Minister on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), paid an official visit to Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Ambassador Kayode Are, at the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, D.C.

General Musa highlighted the importance of U.S. military technology, particularly advanced drone capabilities and satellite intelligence, in strengthening Nigeria’s ongoing operational efforts.

National Sovereignty

He also reaffirmed that Nigeria’s international defence engagements would remain guided by national sovereignty as the country expands and diversifies its strategic partnerships.

The engagement also brought diplomatic and military support mechanisms into sharper focus. Ambassador Are reaffirmed the Embassy’s readiness to facilitate channels for technical training, intelligence sharing and equipment support, while commending security-sector reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The discussions further addressed the changing security environment across the Sahel and the need for stronger regional security frameworks to counter extremist threats.

This places Nigeria’s bilateral defence relationship with Washington within a wider regional security strategy rather than treating the partnership solely as an equipment or procurement relationship.

General Musa also inspected the Embassy’s Defence Section and commended Defence Attaché Air Commodore Valentine Oreaki and his personnel for their work in supporting the Armed Forces’ interests in the United States.

The visit formed part of a week-long series of engagements undertaken by the Defence Minister as a member of a high-level Federal Government delegation led by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to Washington, D.C.

The wider engagement points to an increasingly technology-driven dimension of Nigeria’s defence diplomacy, with intelligence, unmanned systems, technical training and military modernisation becoming central to how Abuja seeks to strengthen its capacity against evolving security threats.
