Nigeria and Vietnam have reaffirmed plans to deepen bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture and political engagement as both countries mark 50 years of diplomatic relations.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Ahmed, said this when he received the Vietnamese Ambassador, Bui Quoc Hung, in Abuja.
According to the Ministry’s spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, the discussions included strengthening political and diplomatic engagement, with both sides considering the establishment of an annual political consultation mechanism.
“Both sides also underscored the importance of sustained high-level visits and institutional exchanges,” Adeniyi said.
He said the two countries also discussed opportunities to expand bilateral trade, noting that trade between Nigeria and Vietnam exceeded one billion dollars in 2025.

Adeniyi quoted the Permanent Secretary as encouraging Vietnamese investors to explore opportunities in agriculture, manufacturing, processing, mining, renewable energy and textiles.
He said, “Nigeria was particularly interested in investments that support domestic production, value addition, employment generation and technology transfer.”
The two sides also reviewed outstanding agreements covering agriculture, defence, investment protection, taxation, consular matters, trade and political consultations.
Adeniyi said, “Both countries viewed the 50th anniversary as an opportunity to consolidate existing partnerships and chart a course towards a higher level of bilateral relations.”
He added that Nigeria and Vietnam reaffirmed their intention to translate bilateral cooperation into practical outcomes in trade, investment, defence and people-to-people exchanges.
