The Nigerian Army has expanded its long-term operational footprint in Nigeria’s South-East with the commencement of a strategic 120-bed Army Medical Centre at Depot Nigerian Army, Amasiri-Edda, reinforcing military healthcare capacity, force sustainment and regional security infrastructure.
The development was announced in a statement issued by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, following the foundation-laying ceremony performed by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, alongside the governors of Ebonyi, Imo, Abia and Enugu States on 8 July 2026.
Beyond providing medical care for soldiers, the facility is expected to strengthen operational support for ongoing and future military deployments across the South-East by improving access to emergency treatment, specialist care and rehabilitation services essential to sustaining a combat-ready force.

The Army also designed the project to strengthen civil-military relations by locating the hospital outside the Depot, allowing surrounding communities to benefit from modern healthcare services while supporting broader public health delivery within the region.
According to the Army, the medical centre will include emergency units, operating theatres, intensive care facilities, diagnostic laboratories, outpatient and specialist clinics, male, female and paediatric wards, alongside a dedicated psychiatric unit for the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other operational stress conditions.
During the ceremony, Lieutenant General Shaibu and the South-East governors described the project as a strategic investment in national security, military readiness and regional stability, noting that stronger healthcare infrastructure directly enhances operational effectiveness while contributing to socio-economic development.
The project further reflects the Nigerian Army’s ongoing investment in permanent military infrastructure as it expands force support capabilities to respond more effectively to evolving security challenges while strengthening its partnership with host communities.
