Nigerian Army Strengthens Tactical Leadership Capacity

Nokai Origin, Abuja

The Nigerian Army has intensified efforts to strengthen tactical and operational leadership capacity among junior and middle cadre personnel as evolving non-state threats continue to reshape Nigeria’s security environment.

Director General of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Retired Major General James Myam, stated that contemporary operational, administrative and logistics challenges now require more adaptive and creative leadership approaches, particularly among officers and soldiers operating in volatile and rapidly changing threat environments.

He stated this during the inauguration of Leadership Skills Development Course 15 of 2026 at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja.

Methods Adjustment

According to him, studies conducted by the centre revealed that non-state actors confronting security forces across multiple theatres continued to adjust their methods, strategies and operational patterns.

He stressed that the Nigerian Army must continue adapting its operational thinking and leadership structure to counter emerging threats effectively.

The Director General noted that the course was designed for personnel of the rank of lieutenant colonel and below, with an emphasis on preparing tactical leaders capable of functioning effectively in increasingly complex operational realities.

He explained that the programme forms part of broader specialised leadership development initiatives that complement conventional military training across service schools.

Psychological Preparedness

Retired Major General Myam stated that modern military leadership now demands intellectual agility and psychological preparedness alongside battlefield competence.

He urged participants to fully engage resource persons and facilitators, expressing confidence that the programme would improve operational effectiveness across formations and units.

Participants are expected to undergo sessions on critical thinking, emotional intelligence, communication, mentoring, teamwork, decision-making, crisis leadership and interagency cooperation.
