Nigerian table tennis sensation, Quadri Aruna, is set for a fresh start in the 2026/27 season, after signing for A.S.D. Tennistavolo Città di Siracusa, which recently secured promotion to the Italian Serie A1 following an unbeaten campaign in Serie A2.
The move begins a new chapter for the former African champion, who briefly stepped away from the international scene following a challenging two-year period disrupted by injuries and a dip in form.
Now, Aruna is ready to return with a renewed sense of purpose to rediscover his best form, rebuild his confidence and climb back up the world rankings.
“The last two years have been challenging, both on and off the table. But I am determined to regain my spot on the global ladder,” said Aruna.
“I am a fighter, and I am ready to endure the rigours of returning to form. Nothing comes easy in life, and I am willing to go through the process to reclaim my place in the rankings.”
During his break, Aruna spent time with his family at home in Lagos, where he trained with fans and friends at his sports club and academy at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
The new season will see the African legend compete on two fronts in Europe, with Aruna also set to feature for Amiens Sport Tennis de Table, a second-division club in the French league, in a bid to help the team secure promotion to the first division.
At Siracusa, Aruna will be joined by fellow African star Mehdi Bouloussa, the recently crowned Mediterranean men’s singles champion in Taranto, Italy, as well as Greek international Panagiotis Gionis.
Currently ranked World No. 81, Aruna has endured a difficult spell on the international circuit this year, including a brief drop to fourth in the African rankings. However, the Nigerian remains a key figure in the national team and continues to captain the side.
With the African Championships in Morocco approaching, Aruna will be hoping to turn the page on a difficult period and begin the climb back towards the level that has made him one of Africa’s most accomplished players.
