NITDA, Meta Commit to Strengthening Youth Online Safety

By Othniel Canice, Abuja

The National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a safer online environment for young Nigerians through its partnership with Meta.

The Agency made this known at the Youth Safety Summit organised by Meta in Abuja, which brought together government officials, educators, civil society groups, technology experts, and other stakeholders.

Call for Collective Action
Speaking at the summit, the NITDA Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa represented by the Acting Director of Digital Literacy and Capacity Building, Dr. Ahmed Tambuwal, stressed the need for collaboration in protecting young people online.

He said “children and youths must be provided with safe, positive, and age-appropriate digital experiences as internet access continues to expand across the country.”

Promoting Digital Literacy
Inuwa noted that digital literacy should go beyond technical skills to include online safety awareness, cyber hygiene, and responsible digital behaviour.

He added that NITDA’s nationwide digital literacy programmes will be strengthened through its partnership with Meta, helping to integrate online safety education into schools and learning institutions.

Focus on Online Protection
Participants at the summit discussed key issues affecting young internet users, including cyberbullying, privacy protection, digital wellbeing, and responsible social media use.

Stakeholders also explored the roles of parents, educators, government agencies, and technology companies in creating safer online spaces.

New Safety Campaign Launched
A major highlight of the event was the launch of the Youth Online Safety Campaign and My Digital World 2.0.

The initiatives, developed by Meta in partnership with NITDA and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, are aimed at promoting digital literacy, online safety awareness, and responsible internet use among young Nigerians.
