The wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Dr  Nonye Soludo, has applauded nurses for their vital role in sustaining healthcare systems and delivering compassionate care, describing them as the “unsung heroes” of society.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Dr Soludo said nurses contribute far beyond clinical duties by bringing hope, comfort and humanity to healthcare delivery.

Dr Soludo, founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, commended nurses in Anambra State and across the world for their dedication, sacrifice and resilience, noting that their contributions remain indispensable to public health and community wellbeing.

“Behind every recovering patient is a dedicated nurse who often stays awake through the night, offering reassurance in moments of fear and anxiety while providing care with patience, strength and love,” she said.

She noted that nurses remain at the front line of healthcare delivery, providing life-saving services under demanding conditions while preserving the dignity of patients and families.

According to her, nurses’ commitment continues to strengthen families, improve health outcomes, and make societies safer and more compassionate.

“The world is healthier, kinder and safer because of the invaluable role you play,” she added.

Dr Soludo also called for sustained support and empowerment for nurses through improved welfare, professional development and greater investment in healthcare systems, stressing that strengthening the nursing profession is essential to achieving quality healthcare delivery.

She urged Nigerians to continue supporting and honouring nurses for their selfless service, dedication and sacrifices toward saving lives and caring for communities.

She congratulated nurses and urged them to remain steadfast in their commitment to excellence and compassionate service.

The statement was issued to commemorate the 2026 International Nurses Day, observed annually on May 12 to mark the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, regarded as the pioneer of modern nursing. The 2026 theme is “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”
