NSIB Mourns with Nigerian Air Force Over Aircraft Accident

By Tanimu Hassan, Abuja

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has sympathised with the Nigerian Air Force over the aircraft accident involving an Air Force ATR-42 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State.

The incident occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, while the aircraft was reportedly conducting a routine mission from Benin to Lagos.

Search and Rescue Underway
The Nigerian Air Force has confirmed the accident and activated search and rescue operations in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies.

In a statement, NSIB Director-General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., expressed condolences to the Air Force and the families and colleagues of all those on board.

The Bureau said “it was ready to provide technical assistance to the Air Force upon formal request, including deploying investigators and using its Flight Safety Laboratory to recover, read and analyse flight recorder data”.

Air Force Leads Investigation
The NSIB explained that because the aircraft involved is a military aircraft, investigative responsibility rests with the Nigerian Air Force.

It, however, said it would provide technical support to the Air Force if formally requested.

The Bureau commended the swift activation of search and rescue operations and the efforts of first responders at the accident site in Igbokoda.

It urged the public to rely solely on official updates from the Nigerian Air Force on the rescue operation and investigation.

The NSIB said it would issue further comments only when appropriate and in consultation with the Nigerian Air Force.
