The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has congratulated Mrs Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, on her election as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), describing her emergence as a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s legal profession and a significant milestone in advancing women’s leadership.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, the Council said the election of Mrs Badejo-Okusanya as the first woman to be democratically elected President of the NBA reflects the growing recognition of merit, competence and visionary leadership in Nigeria’s professional institutions.
The Council noted that her victory extends beyond personal accomplishment, describing it as an inspiration to women and young professionals across the country who continue to break barriers through dedication, resilience and excellence.
According to the statement, the development also resonates within the NUJ FCT Council, where Comrade Grace Ike recently made history as the first woman to be elected Chairman in the Council’s 43-year history.
It said the emergence of women at the helm of two of Nigeria’s foremost professional bodies within a short period underscores the steady progress towards more inclusive and merit-driven leadership.
“The emergence of two women to lead two of Nigeria’s foremost professional bodies within such a short period is a powerful affirmation that our institutions are increasingly rewarding competence, excellence and integrity above all else.
“We are confident that these milestones will inspire more women and young professionals to aspire to leadership positions and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development,” the statement said.
The Council also acknowledged the Nigerian Bar Association’s enduring role in defending constitutional democracy, promoting the rule of law, safeguarding fundamental human rights and advancing the cause of justice in the country.
It expressed confidence that Mrs Badejo-Okusanya’s administration would consolidate the Association’s rich legacy by strengthening public trust in the legal profession and championing reforms that would further enhance the administration of justice.
The NUJ FCT Council further reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration between the media and the legal profession in promoting democratic governance, accountability, press freedom, human rights and the rule of law.
While wishing the President-elect a successful and impactful tenure, the Council expressed optimism that her leadership would leave a lasting legacy of excellence, institutional reforms and greater opportunities for future generations of legal practitioners, particularly women seeking leadership roles.
