Organisation Predicts Heatwaves, Floods, Global Climate Disruptions

By Margaret Ebeshi

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has issued a warning regarding the emergence of El Niño conditions in the tropical Pacific, which are anticipated to intensify rapidly in the forthcoming months.

This development increases the likelihood of heatwaves, droughts, heavy rainfall, and other extreme weather phenomena on a global scale.

As outlined in the WMO’s most recent Global Seasonal Climate Update, forecasts suggest that the climate pattern is poised to advance into a significant El Niño event between July and September, with the most Pronounced impacts expected between November 2026 and February 2027.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo noted that these forecasts indicate a heightened probability of extreme weather occurrences across numerous regions.

“El Niño conditions are already underway and are forecast to strengthen rapidly into a strong event. This will intensify the chances of drought and heavy rainfall and the risk of heatwaves on land and marine heatwaves in many regions of the world,” she said.

Saulo said the WMO has stepped up coordination with governments, humanitarian organisations and climate-sensitive sectors to improve preparedness.

“Advanced seasonal forecasts and early warnings are vital to save lives and cushion the impact on our economies and our communities,” she added.

On rainfall, the WMO forecasts wetter-than-normal conditions over the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, southern Europe, parts of the Gulf of Guinea and the southwestern United States.

The WMO said it is expanding climate information services, early warning systems and regional coordination to help countries prepare for the expected impacts of the strengthening El Niño.

The WMO also announced plans to organise webinars and technical exchanges to strengthen regional coordination and improve communication ahead of the anticipated peak of the El Niño event.
