Mali is hosting more than 322,000 refugees and asylum seekers and over 414,000 internally displaced people, as the country faces mounting humanitarian challenges amid a wider displacement crisis across the Sahel.
Figures presented at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Executive Committee meeting in Geneva show that, as of September 30, 2026, Mali had 322,584 refugees and asylum seekers and 414,524 internally displaced people.
The report also indicates that nearly 91,000 people have returned to Mali, while more than 343,000 Malians remain refugees in other countries.
The number of refugees and asylum seekers in Mali increased by more than 5,300 compared with August, highlighting the growing pressure on humanitarian assistance and protection services.

Across Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, nearly four million people have been displaced, according to UNHCR, underscoring the scale of the humanitarian crisis in the Sahel region.
In central Mali, the Koro region was hosting about 86,000 refugees from neighbouring Burkina Faso as of the end of July.
Meanwhile, Malian authorities say they are taking steps to support voluntary repatriation, provide protection for refugees and reintegrate citizens returning to the country.
The authorities have also introduced measures to address statelessness, including new legislation and the establishment of a specialised national commission.
