The Oyo State Government has increased the number of final-year students benefiting from its bursary scheme from 2,600 to about 5,000.
The Federation of Oyo State Students’ Unions (FOSSU) disclosed this in Ibadan, commending the government for expanding the scheme to cover more Oyo State students in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
FOSSU National President, Ahmed Mufutau, said final-year students face significant financial pressure from research, academic projects, clearance, and other graduation-related expenses.
He disclosed that under the 2026 scheme, final-year Clinical, Aeronautics and Aviation students will receive 500,000 naira each; university undergraduates, 200,000 naira; Higher National Diploma students 150,000 naira; while final-year National Certificate in Education students will receive 100,000 naira.

Mufutau lauded the inclusion of Colleges of Education students as particularly significant, noting that Oyo indigenes at the Nigerian Law School have received 500,000 naira annually under the state’s bursary programme for six consecutive years.
He urged eligible students to prepare their documents ahead of the opening of the bursary portal on October 12, with registration closing on November 1.
The Students’ Union also warned applicants against fraudulent registration links and advised them to rely on official government channels for information.
At the briefing, FOSSU declared its support for Governor Seyi Makinde’s reported presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Mufutau said the union would mobilise support for the governor, citing what he described as the Makinde-led administration’s achievements in education and student welfare.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Victor Olojede, defended the administration’s education policies, including the abolition of a 3,000-naira public secondary school fee, recruitment of teachers, distribution of learning materials, and efforts to return out-of-school children to classrooms.
The 2026 bursary intervention is expected to provide financial assistance to thousands of final-year students as they complete their first degrees.
