The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to national unity, peace and development as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
In an Independence Day message issued on Thursday, October 1, 2026, the party acknowledged that Nigeria was yet to attain its desired level of development but called on citizens not to despair in the face of the country’s challenges.

The PDP called for the effective harnessing of the country’s resources and its ethnic, cultural and religious diversity as instruments of unity, creativity and progress.
The opposition party also urged Nigerians to continue to promote peace, unity and national cohesion, while calling on political leaders and citizens to demonstrate patriotism and reject violence and corruption.
It stressed the need for national interests to take precedence over personal and sectional considerations.
The PDP particularly called for greater attention to the aspirations of young Nigerians, saying the country must be built in a way that enables the younger generation to dream, aspire and look to the future with confidence and hope.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to democracy, good governance and the welfare of Nigerians, saying it was prepared to provide an alternative platform and leadership to help the country realise its full potential.
It also called on Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers and others who had contributed to national development, urging citizens to ensure that the labour of the nation’s heroes past would not be in vain.
The PDP concluded its message with a call for renewed commitment to building a better Nigeria and restoring hope for future generations.
The party said: “Nigeria has what it takes to rise. Nigeria shall be great.”
It wished Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary.
