Tanzania’s Vice President, Emmanuel John Nchimbi, resigned less than a year after taking office, and President Samia Suluhu Hassan accepted his resignation, according to a government spokesperson. No reason was provided for the resignation.
Nchimbi will leave office on September 4, having served as vice president since November last year, according to a statement the government issued on Tuesday on X.
“Constitutional procedures to appoint another vice president of the United Republic of Tanzania will be undertaken.”
Nchimbi previously served as secretary general of the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.
He faced criticism from some members of the party last month following remarks at an event organised by a rights group, where he said he would encourage Tanzanians to push for a new constitution.
“A constitution that leads us towards development, not just material and economic development, but the development of dignity and the human worth of every person living in Tanzania,”
Nchimbi said at the event in Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.
President Hassan won last year’s presidential election with nearly 98% of the vote, although the election was marred by deadly violence.

A government-appointed inquiry panel reported that at least 518 people were killed during the unrest, which followed the exclusion of leading opposition candidates from the election.
