Tinted Glass Permit: Police Warns Officers Against Motorist Extortion

Gloria Essien, Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has warned its officers against extorting motorists over tinted glass permits, reaffirming that permits duly issued by the Force remain valid and legally recognised across the country.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Iniedu, gave the clarification during a courtesy visit by Akwa Ibom State journalists in Abuja.

He said motorists with valid tinted glass permits should not encounter difficulties at police checkpoints, commands, stations or other police formations nationwide.

The police spokesperson stressed that no officer is authorised to harass or extort motorists and other road users over tinted glass permits, urging vehicle owners to obtain their permits only through designated police offices across the country.

Reaffirming the Force’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct, Iniedu said any officer found extorting members of the public over tinted permits or engaging in any form of misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary action.

He encouraged members of the public to report cases of police misconduct through the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU) via the following channels: 08057000001, 08057000002, and WhatsApp/SMS on 08057000003.

The Force spokesman also disclosed that the CRU received 3,922 complaints from members of the public within the last three months, adding that 38 police officers were indicted and are currently undergoing disciplinary procedures.

Iniedu further stated that the security situation across the country had improved significantly, attributing the progress to the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

He noted that the improvement resulted from the Inspector-General’s commitment to motivating personnel, inspiring officers and providing adequate operational resources for effective policing nationwide.

According to him, one of the major initiatives introduced by the IGP is the establishment of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), which has strengthened efforts to combat violent crimes and dismantle criminal syndicates across the country.
