Speaking at the pre-departure reception in Abuja, the Chargée d’Affaires of the British High Commission in Abuja, Ms Vicky Seymour, congratulated the scholars on successfully emerging from the highly competitive application and interview process.
Seymour said the scholarships represented more than an opportunity for academic advancement, describing them as an investment in both the scholars and Nigeria’s future.
“Chevening and Commonwealth Scholars have bright futures – and we see your time in the UK as not only an investment in you as individuals, but also in the future of Nigeria,” she said.
She urged the scholars to make meaningful contributions to Nigeria after completing their studies, drawing inspiration from previous alumni of the programmes.
“On your return to Nigeria, I know you will go on to do great things, just as your alumni have done before you,” Seymour said.
She stated that the scholars should return with the knowledge and experiences gained in the UK and apply them towards national development.
“It is, therefore, my hope that you too will bring these experiences back to Nigeria and use them to achieve remarkable things for your country and put your own mark on the future of this great nation.”
One of the Chevening scholars, Sarah Yanayork, who will study International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex, described her selection as a significant milestone following years of personal and professional development.
Yanayork said the scholarship was a validation of a three-year journey characterised by resilience, growth and a commitment to driving positive change.
“Beyond the academics, Chevening is a call to action, a platform to build global networks, immerse myself in volunteerism, and return to Nigeria fully prepared to champion good governance and inclusive development,” she said.
She described the award as more than a personal achievement, saying it would strengthen her commitment to human rights and community development.
“This honour is not just a personal milestone; it is fuel for a lifelong dedication to human rights and community transformation,” she added.
For Abubakar Umar, a Commonwealth scholar who will study Special Educational Needs at the University of Exeter, the award carries particular significance because he has a hearing impairment.
Umar said his experience of the scholarship process demonstrated the importance of creating inclusive systems that provide opportunities for people with disabilities.
“As a person with a hearing impairment, this is very special for me,” he said.
According to him, the Commonwealth scholarship represents more than an opportunity to obtain a degree, but a pathway towards promoting inclusion.
“Being a Commonwealth Scholar is beyond just a scholarship; it is a journey to an inclusive system – the UK standard. From an inclusive application to an inclusive post-selection process. A journey of resilience and inclusivity has just begun,” Umar added.
The scholars are expected to pursue programmes across a wide range of disciplines, with the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies expected to contribute to Nigeria’s development upon their return.
