UK Invites Nigerians to Apply for 2026 Chevening Scholarships

Mnena Iyorkegh, Abuja

The United Kingdom Government has called on Nigerians with outstanding leadership potential and a commitment to driving sustainable development to apply for the 2026 Chevening Scholarships, describing the programme as a platform for developing the next generation of global leaders.

The call came as applications for the fully funded postgraduate scholarship programme officially opened, with interested candidates expected to submit their applications between August 4 and October 6, 2026.

According to a statement issued by the British High Commission Communications Office and signed by Onyinye Madu, the scholarship offers successful applicants the opportunity to pursue one-year master’s degree programmes at leading UK universities while joining an international network of professionals committed to addressing global challenges.

The Head of the Scholarships Unit at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Emma Hennessey, said Chevening is looking beyond academic excellence to identify individuals capable of making lasting contributions to their communities.

Chevening is looking for exceptional individuals who are ready to collaborate with the UK to help build a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable future. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive cohort of global future leaders, so we are particularly interested in receiving applications from under-represented groups,” she said.

Hennessey explained that the scholarship rewards leadership potential, influence and the ability to build meaningful networks, noting that successful applicants are expected to contribute to solving shared international challenges.

Our scholars and fellows are chosen not only for their achievements, but for their leadership potential, their ability to build meaningful connections, and their commitment to creating lasting impact in their communities and globally,” she stated.

Also speaking, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, said Chevening offers more than a world-class education, describing it as an opportunity to become part of a lifelong global network of changemakers.

Chevening is far more than a scholarship to study in the UK. It is an opportunity to join a global network of exceptional leaders committed to creating positive change in their communities and beyond,” Baxter said.

He encouraged Nigerians with innovative ideas and a commitment to strengthening ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom to seize the opportunity.

If you have a clear vision for making a meaningful impact in areas of shared priority between Nigeria and the UK, I encourage you to apply and take the next step in your leadership journey,” he said.

The British High Commission urged prospective applicants to carefully study the programme’s eligibility requirements and prepare strong applications that clearly demonstrate leadership experience, networking skills and a commitment to public service.

Since its establishment in 1983, Chevening has supported more than 60,000 professionals from over 140 countries and territories, underscoring the UK’s commitment to developing future leaders through education and international collaboration.
