The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has provided 10,000 cartons of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to the Kebbi State Government to help tackle acute malnutrition among children in 11 local government areas.
Speaking during the official launch of the distribution exercise in Birnin Kebbi, Governor Nasir Idris commended UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) for their timely support in addressing the nutritional challenges facing children in the state.
According to the governor, the intervention complements his administration’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare, enhancing food security, and expanding water and sanitation services across Kebbi State.
He pledged continued government support, including the provision of counterpart funding where necessary, to ensure the success of health-related programmes and interventions.

Governor Idris also reaffirmed his administration’s determination to reduce the burden of malnutrition, describing the donation of therapeutic food as a significant contribution toward safeguarding the health of vulnerable children.
In addition, he disclosed that the state government had purchased 20,000 packs of “Kunun Lafiya” for distribution to 10,000 children, at a total cost of N140 million.
“The governor warned against the diversion or illegal sale of the relief materials, directing security agencies to take decisive action against anyone caught tampering with the supplies.”
Representing UNICEF Chief Field Officer in Sokoto, Michael Juma, at the event was senior UNICEF official Isa Ibrahim, who reiterated the organisation’s commitment to supporting child nutrition and healthcare initiatives in Kebbi State.
The beneficiary councils are Dandi, Augie, Bagudo, Suru, Fakai, Maiyama, Danko-Wasagu, Ngaski, Zuru, Shanga and one other affected LGA identified under the intervention programme.
