US Reaffirms Counterterrorism Partnership with Nigeria

The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to counterterrorism cooperation with Nigeria, highlighting recent joint security operations that delivered a significant setback to the Islamic State (ISIS) network.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the statement while discussing American foreign policy and international security partnerships.

Rubio revealed that U.S. and Nigerian security agencies recently worked together in an operation that neutralized a senior global ISIS leader.

According to him, concerns raised by various groups over violence affecting Christian communities in Nigeria have contributed to deeper security collaboration between both nations.

“On Nigeria, where many were very concerned about violence against Christians, we are now actively in counterterrorism cooperation with the Nigerian government and Nigerian security forces,” Rubio said.

He noted that the partnership has already yielded measurable results in the fight against terrorism.

Rubio explained that the cooperation included “a joint operation a couple weeks ago that took out the number two leader of global ISIS, operating from inside of the country, and that continues.”

His comments reflect the growing security relationship between Nigeria and the United States as both countries respond to evolving terrorist threats across West Africa and the broader Sahel region.

Nigeria remains a key player in regional counterterrorism efforts, confronting extremist groups linked to Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and other violent networks.

The country has consistently called for stronger international collaboration to combat terrorism, illegal arms trafficking, and cross-border criminal activities that threaten regional stability.

The latest U.S. recognition comes amid renewed global attention on security concerns in the Lake Chad Basin, the Sahel, and other parts of West Africa.

Nigeria and the United States have long maintained cooperation in areas such as security, peacekeeping, economic development, and democratic governance.

Rubio’s remarks further underscore Nigeria’s strategic role in advancing peace, stability, and counterterrorism efforts across Africa.
