The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), in partnership with the Anambra State Dog Breeders Association has launched the state’s first dog show alongside a free anti-rabies vaccination campaign aimed at promoting public health and animal welfare.
The event, held in Onitsha under the theme “Dog, Man’s Best Friend,” attracted dog owners, veterinarians, breeders and pet-care product dealers from across Anambra State and beyond.
Speaking at the event, Director of Veterinary Services at the Anambra State Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Rose Basil Ejidike, described rabies as a deadly but preventable zoonotic disease and stressed ‘the importance of routine vaccination.’
“By vaccinating our dogs, we are not only protecting them, but also safeguarding our families, our communities and public health,” Ejidike said.
She urged Dog owners to ensure regular vaccination of their pets and promote preventive measures against rabies in their communities.
Ejidike also advocated responsible dog ownership through proper feeding, regular veterinary care, safe housing, identification and appropriate training.
“This means ensuring that our dogs do not pose a risk to public health, safety or community wellbeing,” she said.
The initiative also promotes awareness of the One Health concept linking human, animal and environmental health.
The Chairman of the NVMA Anambra State chapter, Dr. Victor Ughaerumb said the programme formed part of activities marking World Veterinary Day 2026 in the state.
According to him, “the initiative reflects growing collaboration among veterinarians, breeders and sponsors to improve animal healthcare and public awareness.”
“Veterinary doctors contribute significantly to animal and public health in Anambra State.
“We also want people to appreciate the importance of regular vaccination, deworming and proper nutrition for dogs,” Ughaerumba said.

The Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Ifeoma Etukokwu attributed the success of the event to cooperation among stakeholders and pledged to secure more support to expand dog healthcare awareness campaigns.
“We want to create awareness to ensure all dogs are vaccinated and to educate owners on how to protect their animals from infections,” she said.
A board member of the Anambra State Dog Breeders Association, Emmanuel Anugwalu said more than 100 dogs participated in the show, including Rottweilers, Caucasian Shepherds, German Shepherds, Pit Bulls, Bull Mastiffs and mixed breeds.
He reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to healthy breeding practices and continued collaboration with veterinary professionals.
The event featured breed exhibitions, dog competitions, lectures on basic dog training and prize presentations to participating dogs.
