Ireland Ambassador to Nigeria has lauded the existing cordial relations with Nigeria sighting the improved trade and economic cooperation and Educational and Cultural connections between the two nations.
The Ambassador, Mr Peter Ryan stated this during a one-day Ambassadorial Forum held at the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, NIIA Lagos with the theme, ‘Nigeria -Ireland Relations’.
The Ambassador noted that Ireland and Nigeria have very deep strong cultural connections and its diaspora community connection that has never been stronger.
Mr Ryan also revealed that their largest African diasporas are from Nigeria and they have lots of Irish citizens in Nigeria and Ireland is very proud of her relations with Nigeria.
According to the Ambassador, a foremost university in Ireland opened an office in Lagos on Thursday, the first in Africa to facilitate educational exchanges and deepen research cooperation among others.
“Our relationship is as strong as ever and this is very much influenced by the vibrant Nigerian community in Ireland,” Mr Ryan said.
Long-existing diplomatic relations
The Director -general of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Professor Eghosa Osaghae in his opening remarks noted that Nigeria and Ireland have had diplomatic relations since 1960 and commended the efforts of the two countries in the area of trade and investment.
Similarly, A former Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia, Mr Tunde Ajisomo urged Nigeria and Ireland to deepen their relations in the area of Education and Technological development.
A senior research fellow at the Institute, Mrs Rita Agu advised both countries to do more in trade and investment for the benefit of their citizens.
One of the participants at the event, Mr Albert Mayowa in his submission also advised Nigeria and Ireland leaders to look into an improved security development strategy.
