Gratuity Arrears Clearance: Pensioners Laud Anambra Governor

Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), South-East Zone, has praised Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for clearing four years of gratuity arrears owed to retired state and local government workers.

The commendation was made during the union’s South-East zonal meeting held in Awka, the Anambra State capital, which brought together the National President of the union, Mazi Godwin Abumisi, senior union officials, and members from across the region.

Speaking at the event, the Anambra State Head of Service, Barrister Ngozi Iwuno, said the Soludo administration remained committed to the welfare of pensioners and retirees, stressing that their dignity and wellbeing must be protected.

Iwuno described the meeting as an opportunity for pensioners in the South-East to deliberate on issues affecting retirees and strengthen unity within the union.

Addressing participants, the National President of the union, Mazi Godwin Abumisi, urged pensioners not to lose hope despite the challenges facing retirees nationwide.

Sustained Advocacy

He said the recent approval of a ₦32,000 pension harmonisation payment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reflected the outcome of sustained advocacy by the union, noting that the harmonisation would serve as a basis for improved pension payments.

In his welcome address, the Anambra State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Dr. Anthony Ugozor, called on South-East governors to prioritise the welfare and benefits of pensioners in their states.

According to Ugozor, retirees had dedicated the most productive years of their lives to public service and deserved respect, dignity, and prompt payment of their entitlements.

Commendation

The pensioners also commended Governor Soludo for ongoing infrastructural development across Anambra State, particularly in road construction and urban renewal projects, which they said had improved transportation, economic activities, and living conditions for residents.

They further praised the administration’s interventions in the health and education sectors, including the provision of free antenatal care for pregnant women and the free education policy in public schools.

The union described the initiatives as people-oriented programmes aimed at improving access to healthcare and education for low-income families across the state.
