The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr Nonye Soludo, has urged residents to heighten safety measures as flooding affects some communities amid continuing rainfall across parts of Nigeria.
In a statement issued in Awka, Mrs Soludo expressed concern over the impact of flooding on families, particularly residents in flood-prone communities, and urged them to remain vigilant and respond promptly to weather and flood warnings.
Her warning comes amid continuing flood risks across parts of Nigeria, reinforcing the need for residents in vulnerable communities to take precautionary measures and act early when conditions become unsafe.
She advised residents to avoid crossing flooded roads, streams and waterways and to relocate to safer areas whenever their homes or immediate surroundings become unsafe.
Mrs Soludo also urged residents to keep drainage channels clear and stop dumping refuse in waterways.
She noted that blocked drainage systems can worsen flooding and increase risks to lives and property.

The First Lady particularly appealed to parents and guardians to keep children away from floodwaters, drainage channels, streams and other potentially dangerous areas during periods of heavy rainfall.
She called for greater community awareness and collective responsibility, stressing that early action and responsible environmental practices could help reduce the impact of flooding and protect vulnerable communities.
Report Emergencies
Mrs Soludo also urged residents to report emergencies promptly to relevant authorities and encouraged communities to look out for one another and respond quickly whenever floodwaters begin to rise.
She commiserated with families and communities severely affected by the flooding and appealed for calm, assuring residents that the state government was working to provide immediate support while pursuing longer-term measures to address the effects of flooding.
She reiterated that preparedness, vigilance and responsible environmental practices remained essential to protecting lives and reducing flood-related losses.
The Anambra first lady assured residents that the state government would continue to take measures to cushion the impact on affected families and communities.
