Chinese President Xi Jinping met visiting United States President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where both countries agreed to pursue a relationship based on “constructive strategic stability”, a framework intended to guide bilateral ties over the next three years and beyond.
Xi said the world is undergoing rapid changes unseen in a century, with the global landscape becoming increasingly complex and unstable.
He questioned whether China and the United States could avoid the “Thucydides Trap”, establish a new model of major-power relations, jointly address global challenges, and strengthen stability worldwide. Xi said these are critical issues that will shape history, influence the international community, and affect the future of both nations and humanity.
According to Xi, such challenges are defining questions of the modern era that major world leaders must answer together.
He also expressed hope of working closely with Trump to guide China-U.S. relations forward and make 2026 a landmark year that ushers in a new phase in bilateral ties.
He said this approach should promote cooperation as the foundation of stability, maintain healthy competition, manage differences responsibly, and preserve long-term peace.
Xi added that building a constructive and stable China-US relationship must go beyond rhetoric and be reflected through concrete actions from both sides toward shared goals.
