ECOWAS Commission Launches LPG initiative in Sierra Leone

By Is’haq Ahmed, Abuja

The ECOWAS Commission and government of Sierra Leone have launched the ECOWAS LPG 20/20 liquefied petroleum gas Initiative in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The ECOWAS LPG 20-20 initiative marked a major step towards expanding access to clean cooking energy in Sierra Leone.

The launch was held alongside a high-level policy dialogue focused on clean cooking, gender equality, and child protection.

The initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of liquefied petroleum gas as a safer, cleaner household energy source, with a pilot phase expected to facilitate the transition of up to ten thousand households to clean cooking gas canisters across the country.

The programme is intended to improve public health, reduce environmental harm and support the transition away from traditional cooking fuels.

The initiative is meant to create an enabling environment for private investment, standards and supply chains that make LPG more available and affordable.

The ECOWAS Commission continues to implement strategic programmes aimed at deepening cohesion and removing barriers to full integration, with the ultimate goal of transitioning from an “ECOWAS of States” to an “ECOWAS of Peoples: Peace and Prosperity for All” by 2050.
