Gbajabiamila Calls for Stronger Executive-Legislature Cooperation

By Gloria Essien, Abuja

President BolaTinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila has called for stronger cooperation between the Executive and the Legislature to deliver better governance and improve the lives of Nigerians.

Speaking at the 2026 National Assembly Open Week in Abuja, Mr Gbajabiamila said both arms of government, despite their constitutional independence, share a common responsibility to serve the Nigerian people.

He stressed that constructive cooperation does not undermine legislative independence, just as robust debate should not be seen as institutional conflict.

“Our democracy is strengthened when both arms engage with mutual respect, constitutional fidelity and a clear focus on results,” Mr Gbajabiamila said.

He urged lawmakers to assess the impact of the 10th National Assembly beyond the number of activities carried out, focusing instead on laws that solve real problems, budgets that drive development, effective oversight and quality representation.

Mr Gbajabiamila reaffirmed the Presidency’s commitment to a productive partnership with the National Assembly in advancing security, economic growth, social justice and prosperity under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Nigerians expect their institutions to work together,” he stated.

The Chief of Staff also congratulated the 10th National Assembly and stakeholders involved in organising the Open Week, expressing hope that the event would strengthen public trust and democratic accountability.

He called for frank discussions and practical recommendations that would shape future legislative priorities and improve citizen engagement.

Mr Gbajabiamila noted that the theme of the event, “Three Years of the 10th Assembly: Advancing Transparency, Inclusion and Reform,” highlights the key pillars of a credible legislature.

According to him, “transparency builds public trust, inclusion ensures diverse voices are reflected in national priorities, while reform helps institutions respond effectively to emerging challenges.”

He added that the Open Week should serve as a platform for scrutiny, dialogue and partnership, enabling citizens to better understand lawmaking, budget processes and legislative oversight while giving various groups a stronger voice in governance.
