Kano Police Tightens Security for Horse-Riding Events

Salihu Ali, Kano

The Police in Kano State, North West Nigeria has introduced a 72-hour advance notification requirement for anyone planning to organise Durbar or horse and animal-riding activities in public places across the state.

The measure is aimed at enabling security agencies to conduct proper risk assessments and deploy personnel appropriately ahead of such events.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, announced the requirement during a press briefing at the Bompai Police Headquarters, Kano.

He said the directive followed a resolution of the state’s Joint Security Meeting amid concerns over reports of apparent violations of the existing restriction on Durbar and horse-riding activities.

CP Bakori explained that the restriction was introduced by the Kano State Government in consultation with security stakeholders as part of measures to prevent threats to public safety and maintain peace and order.

He said security concerns that led to the restriction remained relevant, stressing that law enforcement agencies would continue to take measures necessary to protect lives and property.

Under the new security coordination arrangement, any individual, institution or organisation intending to hold a Durbar or horse/animal-riding activity in a public place must submit a written notification to the Police Command through the Office of the Commissioner of Police at least 72 hours before the proposed event.

The Commissioner said the notification would enable the Command to assess the security implications of the activity and determine appropriate arrangements to safeguard participants, residents and other members of the public.

He urged residents and organisations to comply with the directive and cooperate with security agencies, warning against actions that could undermine public safety.

CP Bakori assured residents that security agencies in Kano would continue to work jointly to enforce lawful directives and maintain peace and order across the state.
