The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji has called on Data Protection Officers (DPOs) across government institutions to strengthen data protection compliance and promote responsible data practices.
Dr Olatunji made the call in Abuja while declaring open a capacity-building programme for DPOs across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), organised by the NDPC.
He stressed that effective data protection compliance must be driven by organisations through robust systems, processes and human capital.
According to him, “strategic government institutions process significant volumes of personal data, making it essential for DPOs to have the knowledge and skills required to prevent, identify and mitigate data breaches.”
The NDPC boss also reminded participants that non-compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023, carries consequences.
He urged the DPOs to understand their responsibilities, embed data protection principles within their respective institutions and continually improve their professional capacity.

Dr Olatunji further encouraged participants to share knowledge with colleagues, promote a strong culture of data protection and serve as effective ambassadors for responsible data practices.
