The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has congratulated Moroti Adegboyega, a young Nigerian, on emerging overall winner of the 2026 Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden.
In a statement by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of NiDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the achievement as a remarkable feat and a source of pride to Nigeria, saying it demonstrates the talent, innovation and potential of young Nigerians making their mark on the global stage.
Dabiri-Erewa commended Adegboyega for bringing honour to Nigeria through his achievement, noting that he exemplified the excellence and ingenuity for which Nigerians are increasingly recognised around the world.
Adegboyega, who is the son of the Vice President of the Nigerian Canadian Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (NCANL), was also described as an example of the contributions and achievements of Nigerians and their families within diaspora communities.

The NiDCOM Chairman commended the President of NCANL, Olamide Shodipo, and members of the Nigerian community in Newfoundland and Labrador for their support and for sharing the achievement with the Commission.
She said the success of young Nigerians such as Adegboyega should inspire others, while highlighting the importance of providing opportunities and support for innovation, education and excellence.
Dabiri-Erewa wished Adegboyega continued success and encouraged him to remain a worthy ambassador of Nigeria.
She reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to celebrating outstanding achievements by Nigerians in the diaspora and strengthening the connection between Nigeria and its citizens across the world.
Moroti’s winning project developed an autonomous, AI-guided robot that uses biodegradable ferrofluid, a magnetic liquid and magnets to find and remove plastic from water, offering a way to protect marine biodiversity and public health from the risks posed by plastic pollution.
In testing, the system outperformed a simple sieve at collecting the smallest, microplastic-scale particles that usually slip through conventional screening, pointing to an alternative to the manual cleanup methods used today.
The Stockholm Junior Water Prize is an international competition for students aged 15-20 who develop innovative research projects addressing major water challenges.
The competition attracts tens of thousands of participants from around 40 countries worldwide.
