The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas has assured oil-producing companies of the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to strengthening the protection of critical petroleum infrastructure to support increased crude oil production in the country.
Vice Admiral Abbas gave the assurance when he received a delegation from the Security Sub-Committee of the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), led by its Chairman, Mr. Johnson Ogbum, at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, discussions during the meeting focused on enhancing security around oil production facilities, remote assets and export terminals.
They also discussed how tackle crude oil theft, third-party interference and threats to offshore and near-shore infrastructure.
The OPTS delegation requested increased naval patrols in vulnerable maritime areas and security support for the movement of petroleum products.
Responding, the CNS reaffirmed the Navy’s resolve to secure Nigeria’s maritime domain and safeguard critical national economic assets.
He noted that ongoing naval operations have contributed significantly to reducing crude oil theft and other maritime crimes in the country.
Vice Admiral Abbas stressed that effective intelligence sharing between oil-producing companies and the Nigerian Navy remains vital to identifying threats early and improving operational responses.
He further underscored the role of technology in enhancing maritime surveillance and patrol operations, assuring the delegation that requests for support would be considered based on identified security needs and formal requests from affected organisations.
The meeting, according to the Navy, reinforced ongoing collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and stakeholders in the oil and gas sector aimed “at creating a secure maritime environment, protecting critical infrastructure and boosting Nigeria’s crude oil production output.”
