The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has congratulated the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development (MBNCWD), Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, on her birthday, recognising her advocacy for women’s leadership in the media and the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
The congratulatory message was contained in a statement signed by the NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike.
Ike said Benjamins-Laniyi’s leadership had focused on promoting equity, strengthening institutional capacity and expanding opportunities for women and other under-represented groups.
She noted that the Director-General had championed initiatives to increase women’s participation in media leadership, including mentoring and creating opportunities for women to contribute to public discourse and policy development.
“As a tireless advocate for women’s advancement, she has actively championed pathways that place women in media leadership roles, mentoring and opening doors so that more women can shape public discourse and policy,” Ike said.
She also highlighted Benjamins-Laniyi’s advocacy for persons with disabilities, noting that it had drawn greater attention to accessibility, representation and inclusion in institutional programmes.
According to Ike, the Director-General’s approach to leadership is characterised by collaboration, integrity and a commitment to engaging stakeholders across different sectors.
She stated that, under her leadership, the Centre had continued to promote gender-responsive leadership, capacity building and advocacy for women’s development.
The NUJ FCT Council also acknowledged Benjamins-Laniyi’s support for the professional development of women journalists and efforts to encourage more women to take up leadership positions in the media industry.
The council expressed its commitment to continued collaboration with the Centre in advancing gender equality, inclusive representation and opportunities for women across Nigeria.
