President Tinubu’s Confidence in Customs Leadership a Pathway to Achieving Nigeria’s $1 Trillion Economy

By Elizabeth Christopher

Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

The extension, which will expire in February 2027, has attracted considerable attention among stakeholders in the nation’s trade and maritime sectors, with many describing it as a testament to the administration’s commitment to building a sustainable one-trillion-dollar economy.

According to the Presidency, the extension is intended to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms and facilitate the completion of key modernisation projects considered critical to Nigeria’s economic growth and trade facilitation agenda.

In public administration, continuity is often necessary when reforms are yielding tangible results. That appears to be the thinking behind the President’s confidence in the Customs chief, whose stewardship has transformed the Service into a more efficient and technology-driven institution.

Under the leadership of Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the Nigeria Customs Service has consistently surpassed its revenue targets. In the first half of 2025 alone, the Service generated ₦3.68 trillion, exceeding its target by ₦390.2 billion, representing an increase of 11.85 per cent. This impressive revenue performance further consolidated Customs’ position as one of the major contributors to the nation’s fiscal stability.

Beyond revenue generation, the Customs boss has championed ambitious modernisation programmes aimed at facilitating trade and improving the ease of doing business. One of such initiatives is the indigenous B’Odogwu Unified Customs Management System, designed to enhance efficiency, transparency and automation in customs processes.

The project represents a major step towards reducing bottlenecks and positioning Nigeria’s trade environment in line with international best practices.

Another landmark achievement is the Authorised Economic Operator programme, which has delivered remarkable outcomes. The initiative contributed about ₦1.585 trillion in revenue and accounted for over 21 per cent of total collections, while reducing cargo clearance time from 168 hours to 41 hours. These improvements have significantly lowered transaction costs and enhanced efficiency for compliant businesses.

Equally significant is the ongoing implementation of the National Single Window project, a flagship initiative of the Tinubu administration aimed at integrating trade procedures across government agencies. With Customs playing a central role, the initiative is expected to reduce bureaucracy, improve transparency and boost Nigeria’s competitiveness in international trade.

On the international stage, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi brought further recognition to Nigeria when he emerged as the first Nigerian to be unanimously elected Chairman of the World Customs Organisation Council, the highest decision-making body of the global customs community, comprising 186 member states. This feat not only elevated Nigeria’s profile but also reflected the confidence reposed in his leadership and reform credentials. These milestones suggest that President Tinubu’s decision to extend the tenure of the Comptroller-General of Customs is rooted in the desire to sustain ongoing reforms and consolidate the gains already recorded.

The extension is, therefore, seen as more than an administrative decision. It represents a vote of confidence in a public servant whose performance, professionalism and commitment to innovation have earned recognition both at home and abroad.

Indeed, at a time when continuity is essential to institutional transformation and economic growth, retaining proven leadership may well prove instrumental in advancing Nigeria’s aspiration of becoming a one-trillion-dollar economy.

On the whole, the extended leadership, despite the success recorded, should pursue with vigor all the innovations introduced and bring in dynamism in order to grow the economy even beyond the set targets.
