A calm atmosphere has enveloped Ado-Ekiti as well as major towns and communities across Ekiti State on Sunday, after the early declaration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji as the winner of the 2026 governorship election.

The election, which was conducted on Saturday, June 20, 2026, across the state’s 16 local government areas, culminated in the re-election of the incumbent governor under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oyebanji Wins Ekiti Governorship Election

The incumbent Governor, Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a decisive victory in the 2026 Ekiti State governorship election, securing a second term in office.

Oyebamiji defeated his closest rival, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Wole Oluyede, who scored 40,543 votes and the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ambassador Dare Bejide who polled 12,872 votes. While Ojo Ayodeji of ADP came fourth with 1269 votes, Opeyemi Falegan of the Accord Party occupied the fifth position with 564 votes.

Ekiti Poll Peaceful, Observers Note Minor Concerns

The Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room has described the Ekiti State governorship election as largely peaceful and orderly, despite a few operational challenges recorded in some rural communities.

Speaking during an assessment of the poll, the Head of Programmes and Policy at ActionAid Nigeria and co-convener of the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, Celestine Okwudili Odo, said the organisation, in collaboration with its partners, deployed observers across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state to monitor the electoral process.

Voters Remain Determined Despite BVAS Delays in Ado-Ekiti

Voters at Polling Unit 018 in Ado-Ekiti remained orderly and determined to cast their ballots on Saturday despite delays caused by intermittent malfunction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) during the Ekiti State governorship election.

The polling unit, located in the open space in front of the Federal Polytechnic, has a registered voter population of 884.

Voters across Ekiti State are heading to the polls today, Saturday, June 20, 2026, to elect a governor who will lead the state for the next four years.

The election is taking place across the state’s 16 local government areas, 177 wards and 2,445 polling units, with electoral officials, security agencies and political parties saying “they are ready for the exercise.”

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), “1,059,360 registered voters are expected to participate in the election. Of this number, 1,028,929 have collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and are eligible to vote.”
