The United States has continued to mediate efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, but the negotiations have produced little progress over the past six months.
The latest trilateral talks, which ended in early February in Abu Dhabi, yielded no major breakthroughs beyond agreements on prisoner exchanges and a commitment to hold further discussions.
Since then, Washington’s attention has shifted to its conflict with Iran, which began on 28 February.
Trump and Zelensky met at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, on 8 July. The meeting struck a positive tone, with Trump publicly pledging to let Ukraine produce its own Patriot interceptor missiles, a move that could strengthen the country’s defences against Russian missile attacks.
Zelensky also recently held talks with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on “how to bring peace closer”, the Ukrainian president said in a social media post.
